After the long awaited year of anticipating the second part of Wicked, Wicked: For Good was released the weekend before Thanksgiving and fans erupted with emotion over the new movie in theaters.

The first movie, Wicked, was based on the first act of the Broadway production. It reimagines the backstory of the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch of Oz. Ariana Grande played Glinda, the good witch, and Cynthia Erivo played Elphaba, the evil witch. The two characters went to school, Shiz University, and ended up becoming roommates after they were forced to by Madame Morrible. Elphaba felt like an outsider due to her green skin color, however Glinda taught her how to fit into society by giving her a makeover and offering her tips on how to become popular. With a story filled with themes like prejudice, identity, friendship, and corrupt power, the two witches slowly developed a genuine friendship.

The second movie portrays the second act of the Broadway production, picking up exactly from where the first movie ended. Elphaba is labeled as the Wicked Witch of the West after she discovers the corruption of the wizard. At the same time, Glinda earns the title of Glinda the Good, learning how to be a leader in front of her community, even while knowing the secrets behind the palace of the Emerald City. While trying to play the role of someone who is good and lives on her people’s wishes of destroying Elphaba, Glinda misses her best friend and wants everything to go back to normal like when they were in school. Wicked: For Good reflects several themes like the consequences of power, the manipulation of truth and propaganda, and the complex nature of good and evil, opening up new doors for the two witches to decide what is best for each other.

Throughout the Wicked franchise, the popularity has proven to be seen both on stage and on screen. Part one of the Wicked movie franchise won two Academy Awards for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design, a Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, and multiple Critics’ Choice Awards. According to NBP, Wicked: For Good is less likely to earn the same amount of nominations due to the rarity and lack of people enjoying sequels. Being able to voice opinions on the internet and having mixed reviews on social media makes it hard to see what is going to happen in the future.

Additionally, many people are upset with certain cuts that occurred in Wicked: For Good. According to Elle Magazine, Dona Fox who is the co-screenwriter of Wicked spoke up and said that some scenes that were cut in the movie were for the right reasons due to not wanting any mixed emotions about any of the characters. Nonetheless, according to ABC News, Wicked: For Good has bypassed the first movie with its popularity, reaching up to $150 million dollars in sales at theatres from North America and $226 million globally. With fans hoping to extend and add a third Wicked movie, there are no official plans that have been processed, but there is a possible opening for the opportunity.
