After making their first state championship in 19 years a season ago, Hudsonville has followed up with another successful season. The football team holds a perfect overall 10-0 record and a 7-0 record in their league. With the school being ranked among the top teams in the state, the Eagles are in first place in their conference and are expected to be a top contender in Division 1 as they head into the playoffs.
In their conference—the Ottawa-Kent Red conference (also referred to as OK Red), the other teams include Grand Haven, Grandville, East Kentwood, Rockford, and West Ottawa. However, the school plays select schools from the OK Green conference: for example, Jenison and Caledonia in this year’s season. Some of the team’s key victories include a close 43-42 victory over East Kentwood and a 42-0 win over Jenison.
Various memorable moments have been made on the field this year like senior Lawsyn Weber’s game-winning catch against Rockford. Weber brought down a pass from senior quarterback Brady Vanlaecke with one hand, propelling the school into a 35-28 win over Rockford. This catch was so spectacular that it went viral and was the No. 1 play on ESPN’s SportsCenter. Another major highlight of the season was a last-second “Hail Mary” win against East Kentwood. Vanlaecke threw a pass toward the end zone as time expired. The pass was tipped by junior Levi VanderVeen before being caught by senior Andrew Meerman for the touchdown, which tied the game at 42-42. After a penalty, the game winning point was then kicked by senior John Tillotson from 30 yards out, giving the school a 43-42 win.
New records were made as the school finished their regular season undefeated for the first time in school history. As a result, the Detroit Lions named head coach Brent Sandee Detroit Lions High School Football “Coach of the week” for week nine.
According to Fox 17 West Michigan News, the school is considered one of the top teams in Michigan and are preparing for a strong playoff run. This statement was supported by the team’s win in their playoff game against Jenison, ending in a 47-7 victory advancing them in the tournament. MaxPreps states that the school has a strong team backed by talented coaches allowing them to finish off their season strong and undefeated as they advance into the MHSAA playoffs and possibly into the Regional Finals.
