28 Years Later will be released twenty-three years after the movie that started the series was made. The post-apocalyptic trilogy began in 2002 with 28 Days Later and a following sequel in 2007. The upcoming movie will come to theaters on June 20th of this year. Although this upcoming film is already a part of the 28 Days Later trilogy, two more parts based off of the new movie are expected to be released, with part two coming out in 2026.
The apocalyptic series is set in a dystopian world that has been severely impacted by a fictional disease known as the rage virus. The virus transforms people into bloodthirsty, red-eyed zombies. The first film was directed by the acclaimed filmmaker Danny Boyle. He not only directed the original film in the series, but also took on the role of executive producer for its sequel, 28 Weeks Later. The upcoming film will also be directed by Boyle. After the sequel was released in 2007, the film’s production company confirmed development on 28 Years Later which would depend on the success of the prior movie. In July of 2007, Boyle said that the plot for the upcoming film had been decided. Oscar winner Cillian Murphy, who starred in the series’ first film and will be an executive producer for the upcoming movie, expressed interest in reprising his role in the first film if the storyline called for it. 28 Years Later is set in Lindisfarne, an island off the Northeastern coast of England. The plot follows a man named Jamie, who is played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who takes his son, Spike played by Alfie Williams, on a mission to the mainland and discover the mutated horrors and the effects of the rage virus. Other characters include Jamie’s wife Isla, played by Jodie C][omer, Ralph Fiennes as Dr. Kelson, and Jack O’Connell as Sir Jimmy Crystal, a cult leader. The official trailer for the upcoming movie came out in early December of last year and featured Rudyard Kipling’s 1915 poem, “Boots”. The poem’s purpose was to train soldiers for captivity and prepare them for the psychological challenges that they would face, which are similar to the challenges the characters of 28
Years Later will face in the film’s dystopian and militant world. Zombie enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the film’s release, while cast and crew members share insights about it. 28 Years Later is poised to deliver yet another startling chapter in the dystopia series.
