When people think of holidays, many people think of colorful decorations and holiday magic. However, the rise of the minimalist aesthetic in both home design and decor has led to the rise of mothers who love this style. The internet has labeled them “Sad Beige Moms”.

This aesthetic can be described as having varying shades of grey, white, and brown. It is also described to be free of clutter, with few distractions and a calming vibe. This can also be seen in clothing, room decor, and even holiday ornaments and trimmings.

Some people believe that this aesthetic is harmful to a child’s development. While that can be the case, it's not always the truth. According to “Disruptive Effects of Colorful vs. Non-colorful Play Area on Structured Play”, a 2016 study.

This study stated that children between the ages of five and eight performed better in environments that were free of color. Whereas children between the ages of three and four performed better in rooms and play areas that had more color.

There is some question that with companies making their target audience these people, they will lose what makes them unique. Brands might have once pushed creativity but are now not producing those items anymore for fear of how they will do on the market. Instead, the end product is boring and labeled safe, according to creative brand designer Lance Corrigan.

The people who oppose this aesthetic are particularly upset that the holidays are being made to fit this aesthetic, especially Christmas and Thanksgiving, which are normally very colorful holidays.

A colorful Christmas would have green and red tinsel, colorful lights, and a Christmas tree covered in fun decorations. However, a beige or minimalist Christmas can be seen with softly colored decorations in varying shades of brown and grey. It also includes Christmas trees decorated with soft white lights and brown and grey decorations.

Many people against this aesthetic claim that this removing an important part of the magic of Christmas, which can easily be believed when the rich reds and greens of this holiday are switched with the calm pale beiges and browns. While this may induce the calming effect that is associated with these colors may be established, it can be seen as boring and unexpressive by some.
