Plushie Dreadfuls are a line of stuffed animals, mostly rabbits, made popular by their peculiar patched and slightly creepy designs. The company was founded and began to gain traction in 2015. Although the company would continue to receive relative success, its image would take a massive hit in the years to follow.
One of the things that set the company apart is its various collections of disability and illness related plushies as well as a seperate pride collection which aims to uplift and support these identities. However, recent events and statements from the company and its creator have led to many regular customers to speculate on the company’s true intentions and reevaluate where their support lies.
For one thing, many of the designs themselves are cause for offense despite the company’s claims that they are designed by people who have “experience with the disorder”. An infantilized ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) rabbit with wide child-like eyes is featured in their store as well as a demonic, mask wearing OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) rabbit. While these designs obviously don’t offend all, they are not representive of these communities and are wildly stereotypical.
Even more concerning is that Plushie Dreadfuls are also harming marginalized groups more directly as they donate a portion of their proceeds to ABA therapy which is considered by a majority of the autistic community as being “autism conversion therapy” and can have lasting negative effects.
As if the company was not already in hot water, the creator was also quoted online claiming pansexuality to be a mere phase while expressing his dissatisfaction with the drop in sales.. Invalidating an entire identity that he claimed to be in support of. This reaffirmed for many the notion that they were nothing more than money to him and that he did not value them as people.
The company's reputation continues to decline as more and more people come out with stories of terrible customer service and general bullying. Even the website itself didn’t work completely as it should.
