The story of Frankenstein, a creature constructed of spare body parts, was once again brought to life in a new movie just in time for the spooky season. The movie was released to theaters on October 17, 2025. The original story of Frankenstein first came about over 200 years ago by Mary Shelley who was just nineteen years old. Shelley’s incredible ability to write such a well-known historical piece of literature originated from the people and environment she grew up with. Shelley’s father was a philosopher, her mother was a devoted feminist, and Shelley's husband was a romantic poet. With the work of the influential people in her life and the trauma she endured at such a young age she was able to construct a sensational gothic horror story that is still loved to this day.

Shelley’s development of the story was first written on a stormy night when she got a sudden spark of inspiration as her husband, Percy, and a close friend of his both undertook stories about ghosts. By morning she had created her entire outline of the story which started off with Dr. Victor Frankenstein, a crazed scientist who wanted to extend life and restore health out of his best intentions created an 8 foot tall human, constructed of body parts from unearthed graves. In Shelley’s novel, Frankenstein had challenged God by creating life and therefore endured the punishment of his own creation, killing his closest friends and relatives including his wife, Elizabeth. Shelley’s story didn’t exactly provide information on how Frankenstein brought his creation to life, but it was insinuated he used the powers of electricity to strike life into the pale yellow skinned creature.

Now, Shelley’s story is once again being struck back to life by Guillermo del Toro after 30 long years of perfecting his vision of the movie. He’s done everything in his power to incorporate Shelley’s original elements from her novel to make his movie just as chilling. Frankenstein was the very reason why Toro wanted to go into filmmaking, ever since he was a child he wanted to write and direct a Frankenstein movie. That was long before he ever thought about making some of his movies like Pan’s Labyrinth, The Shape of Water, and most recently Toro’s Pinocchio. Frankenstein was expected to be a huge success that Netflix backed it with $120 million. Toro’s Frankenstein is set to delve into Victor Frankenstein, starring Oscar Isaac, and how he was driven into becoming a mad scientist by his overbearing father, portrayed by Charles Dance. The movie will dive into how Frankenstein will become an abusive father to his “son”, the creature, who is played by Jacob Elordi after he grows disappointed with his creation and how it will slowly lead to Frankenstein and his creation’s undoing.
