Sophomores Haven Boonstra and Aubrey Hofmeister recently formed a musical duet, having launched their partnership at the start of freshman year. The duo have been best friends since 3rd grade, “so it just clicked when it came to music and our interests.” said Boonstra. After the initial click, the pair started to write a song together in ninth grade.
Boonstra said that the duo’s singing group, going by the name “Red Romance”, is inspired by pop artists including Sabrina Carpenter, Gracie Abrams, and Sarah Cothran. “Personally I love music from the 1960s, but we definitely draw from Sarah Corhran, she has such an amazing style of music and her lyricism is out of this world!’ Hofmeister said, “you can find us on YouTube at ‘Red Romance’. On that page we post our own music, covers, and we announce where we are performing and at what time.”
Currently, the channel has 23 videos and about 27,000 views. Boonstra and Hofmeister are both involved in several extracurricular activities related to art and music at the school. They have been in choir since middle school and are involved in school plays, including the upcoming spring musical; Shrek. Hofmeister was also involved in the school’s production of Alice in Wonderland in early November last year. Additionally, both girls play the piano, which aids them in writing their original songs including “Power Ballad”.
Regarding the band’s future, Boonstra and Hofmeister would like to change the group’s name when the band expands. “Me and Aubrey don’t really have huge plans per se, but we want to record, do more open mic nights around here, write more songs, cover more songs, that kind of stuff,” said Boonsra. “I know someone who could potentially help us record, but other than that we’d just like to continue performing,” said Hofmeister. As the band progresses, the duo is excited to see what the future may hold for them as musicians.
