Art Prize is something that has been happening since 2009 in Grand Rapids. Art Prize is an opportunity for new or existing artists to earn some money and show off their latest creation. It is also an opportunity to create an economic impact in Grand Rapids.

These pieces can be from varying categories that include 2D, 3D, Design, New Media, Installation, and Time Base. This year there are a total of 931 entries and 1,100 artists. People can vote on different pieces of art work from these categories. When people vote on art in these different categories the votes get counted, and the artists can gain the prize of 400,000 dollars. On top of that, the people behind Art Prize give out 200,000 dollars to annual grants. These grants are meant to give money to aspiring artists.

Exhibits can be found in many different places all throughout the city of Grand Rapids. They can be found in galleries, storefronts, breweries, public places and many other venues. There are many events that are happening during Art Prize. “ArtPrize 2025 kicked off Sept. 18 and shifts into high gear the next day (Sept. 19) with a lavish carnival-inspired Opening Celebration featured a parade, brass band, costumed performers, pop-up installations and a fireworks spectacle. A Sept. 26 HalfTime Show in Sixth Street Park served up a music-festival vibe with local bands, food trucks and an announcement of the top 20 vote-getters in each downtown district. The ArtPrize Awards Ceremony on Oct. 4 recognize the entries that captured hearts and sparked conversations against a backdrop of live music, standout fashion and an air of excitement.” according to the Art Prize website.

Art Prize has been shown to have a great impact on the Grand Rapids economy. This event brings in people from out of town and many other places. The main reason the impact is so high is due to the higher visitor spending. Businesses with venues may also gain more foot traffic and recognition. Art Prize is an event that is special to the Grand Rapids community and the economic stability of the area.
